About this event

(Petworth) 50-Minute Ashtanga/Power Flow @ 3905 Georgia Ave NW Class description: This flow class is based on the classic flow sequence of the Ashtanga primary and second series sequences, or when led by substitute teachers may instead feature aspects of the Baptiste Power Flow sequence. This class features: - A few breath-coordinated sun salutations to warm the body and mind to the practice - Standing poses for strength and flexibility, preparing the body for deeper poses later in the practice - Seated poses including forward folds to promote deeper flexibility and meditative reflection - Backbending poses to lengthen your spine, increase flexibility, and improve mobility, which helps promote good posture Transitions between the postures are linked and in harmony with meditative breathing, rather than jumping back and forth between each side of each pose. If you are familiar with Ashtanga, this adaptive practice can be more fun and easier going than the set primary series and second series Ashtanga sequences. To help you adapt the poses to your body, the instructor will share how to use yoga props for support. People with any level of experience, strength and flexibility are all welcome. Whenever possible, the room temperature will be approximately 75-78F to promote flexibility and detoxification. Please plan to arrive at least five minutes before class, as our doors are locked at the scheduled start time for security. If you need our support, text or call us at 202-265-YOGA. If you’ve reserved a spot but can’t attend, we’re not able to offer refunds; however, you may be eligible for a class credit. Just email our accounts team at yogadc@yogadistrict.com for support. By signing up for this class, you agree to our wellness policy: please do not attend if you have a contagious condition, and if you are sneezing, sniffling, or coughing due to allergies, we ask that you wear a mask while in the studio. Read on to learn about class levels, details on the class sequencing, and important information about your class location/format. Why the same class type can feel different when taught by different teachers: It’s our mission to ensure yoga is accessible and meets your needs! Each Yoga District teacher has their own way of teaching yoga, so we recommend trying a variety of class types with a variety of teachers. With so many options, you're bound to find a teacher and class type that work for you! Class levels: - In our all levels, aka level 1-3 classes, options for all levels of experience are offered. - In our level 1-2 class, options for both total beginners as well as intermediate practitioners of yoga will be provided - In level 1.5-2 classes, options for beginners with some experience as well as intermediate participants are provided. - In level 2-3 classes, options for both intermediate and advanced participants will be provided. - In level 1.5-3 class, options for beginners with some experience as well as intermediate and advanced participants will be provided. - In level 1 and level 1-1.5 classes, options for people totally new to yoga are the focus. Here's what to expect in the beginning, middle and end of class: Classes usually start with a series of "grounding," stabilizing movements. This can help you reconnect your mind with your body, while connecting the pace of body movements to the breath. Then the class usually transitions to more warming, strengthening, engaging poses. Toward the end of class you may find poses that focus on flexibility and release. Class usually ends with a final relaxation in "savasana" pose, during which you can lay quietly in stillness to let go. This combination of practices can help you achieve what some refer to as the goal of yoga: awareness of interconnectivity and oneness, bringing about a compassionate way of being.
