About this event
Please Note: This is a free program; registration required. This evening explores how orchids have become powerful symbols of friendship, diplomacy, and international collaboration. Marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Singapore in 2026, this special program highlights the two nations' enduring connections through the lenses of horticulture, conservation, and cultural exchange. Learn about Singapore's practice of orchid diplomacy and the Smithsonian's leadership in orchid research, conservation, and cultivation from a panel of experts including Smithsonian Gardens Lead Horticulturist Justin Kondrat, who manages the Smithsonian's Orchid Collection, and Mark Choo, assistant curator at the National Orchid Garden in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Find out how the naming of orchid hybrids has been used to strengthen relationships between nations, commemorate significant milestones, and honor world leaders. The program also delves into the remarkable diversity of orchids, the importance of plant conservation, and the role botanical gardens play in preserving biodiversity while fostering global understanding. Through engaging stories and distinctive perspectives, discover how a single flower can serve as a living symbol of partnership, shared values, and international goodwill. Join the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore, Singapore Botanic Gardens, and Smithsonian Gardens for an inspiring conversation celebrating history, diplomacy, and the enduring power of plants to connect people across cultures and borders. About the Enduring Power of International Exchange series Hosted in partnership with Smithsonian's Office of Global Affairs and with embassies that have built strong, lasting relationships with the United States, this series honors the vital role diplomacy, cultural exchange, and mutual respect have played in shaping our nation and its place in the world. From the earliest days surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence to contemporary collaborations in science, art, and global affairs, embassy relationships have helped advance dialogue and deepened understanding. In this milestone year, these programs underscore how international friendships-nurtured through history, culture, and creativity-continue to strengthen the American story. Each program is free, requires registration, and includes a reception. The Enduring Power of International Exchange is organized by Smithsonian Associates as part of the Smithsonian's " Our Shared Future: 250 ."
