Description: A program of piano trios exploring unexpected sonorities—prepared and extended techniques and unconventional timbres—juxtaposed with Maurice Ravel’s Piano Trio. Works by Katherine Balch, Pascal Le Boeuf, and Shawn Okpebholo’s City Beautiful move from experimental, industrial‑inflected sound worlds into Ravel’s trio, which bridges late‑Romantic warmth and early‑modern experimentation—lyricism and lush harmony alongside novel textures.

Three piano trios by living American composers that explore unexpected sonorities are capped with Maurice Ravel’s groundbreaking foray into the form more than a century ago. The experimental, industrial‑inflected sound worlds of Katherine Balch, Pascal Le Boeuf and Shawn Okpebholo contrast with Ravel’s trio, which bridges lyricism and lush harmony alongside novel textures.
