Journey to Italy's spectacular northern mountains, where dramatic Alpine landscapes, centuries-old vineyards and a fascinating blend of Italian and Austrian traditions have given rise to some of the country's most distinctive wines.

For this special tasting, we'll explore Trentino-Alto Adige through two remarkable native red grapes, Lagrein and Teroldego , celebrated for their rich fruit, vibrant character and surprising elegance. Far less familiar than Chianti or Barolo, these are wines that deserve a place on every Italian wine lover's radar.

Our first stop is Pitsch am Bach , a tiny family estate near Bolzano in Alto Adige, owned by the Schweigkofler family for eight generations. With steep, sun-drenched vineyards and a winemaking heritage dating back centuries, the family produces just a few thousand bottles annually. Their Lagrein captures the character of this mountainous region, offering dark berry flavors, velvety tannins and a beautiful balance of richness and freshness.

We'll then venture south into Trentino's renowned Rotaliana plain to discover Redondèl , where husband-and-wife team Paolo and Mara Zanini have devoted their small family estate entirely to Teroldego. Their winemaking traditions reach back to the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and their wines showcase the remarkable versatility of this often-overlooked grape, from bright, juicy fruit to deeper, more structured expressions.
