About this event

Flow for Strength and Resilience @ 300 Morse St NE Through a combination of fast-paced and long-held poses, this class focuses on cultivating strength, balance, endurance, and a sense of joy and ease by integrating poses with the breath, and resolving to finding stillness in mind and body even as we move and exert ourselves. Working with poses, breathwork, and philosophy, we explore the connections between physical, mental, and emotional modes of strength and endurance, and work to cultivate an embodied distinction between resilience and tension, effort and ease. Class begins with a few minutes of stillness and centering, sometimes with simple breath work, then we go through warm up to get various muscles ready before moving into a moderately fast flow in which poses gradually get more intense, interrupted by short periods of stillness and grounding (e.g. mountain or child pose). Focus will be on moving with integrity and having fun. Class ends with a period of rest and stillness to help students integrate the practice in their bodies and minds. This class is suitable for anyone looking to deepen their practice and cultivate intention and awareness to move beyond merely pushing harder. Red light therapy (RLT): During savasana, red light therapy will be offered in half of the room. Many people find red light supportive for relaxation and recovery. When you arrive, you can choose a mat in the red light area or in the non-lit area based on your preferences. Arrival: Participants need to reserve their spot in class in advance, have an account with us, and arrive at least five minutes before class, as our doors are locked at the scheduled start time for security and to avoid class interruptions. If you need our support or are too late to arrive on time, text or call us at 202-265-YOGA rather than knocking. By signing up for this class, you agree to our wellness policy: that you will not attend if you have a contagious condition, and that if you are sneezing, sniffling, or coughing due to allergies, we ask that you wear a mask while in the studio. Why the same class type can feel different when taught by different teachers: It’s our mission to ensure yoga is accessible and meets your needs! Each Yoga District teacher has their own way of teaching yoga, so we recommend trying a variety of class types with a variety of teachers. With so many options, you're bound to find a teacher and class type that work for you! Class levels: - In our all levels, aka level 1-3 classes, options for all levels of experience are offered. - In our level 1-2 class, options for both total beginners as well as intermediate practitioners of yoga will be provided. - In level 1.5-2 classes, options for beginners with some experience as well as intermediate participants are provided. - In level 2-3 classes, options for both intermediate and advanced participants will be provided. - In level 1.5-3 class, options for beginners with some experience as well as intermediate and advanced participants will be provided. - In level 1 and level 1-1.5 classes, options for people totally new to yoga are the focus. Here's what to expect in the beginning, middle and end of class: Classes usually start with a series of "grounding", stabilizing movements. This can help you reconnect your mind with your body, while connecting the pace of body movements to the breath. Then the class usually transitions to more warming, strengthening, engaging poses. Toward the end of class you may find poses that focus on flexibility and release. Class usually ends with a final relaxation in "savasana" pose, during which you can lay quietly in stillness to let go. This combination of practices can help you achieve what some refer to as the goal of yoga: awareness of interconnectivity and oneness, bringing about a compassionate way of being.
